“Sweet as a Whistle”- judge’s words on Holstein champ at Newark and Notts

In the dairy lines it was a Holstein heifer forward from Ann Holdcroft and Sons, Burton on Trent that secured the dairy interbreed title. This one, Dovetrent Prom Sandra, out of Dovetrent Gibson Sandra, who also did a lot of winning in her time, is a first calver and is due in October.

Sandra is no stranger to the show ring having won champion calf at Staffordshire County Show and Derby. She is due to be shown at Staffordshire, Lincoln and Bakewell as well as other local shows later in the season.

In reserve was the Jersey cow Saxown Connections Heidi 7 owned by 14 year old Tom Saxby of Skipton. This Fourth Calver yields about 28kgs a day and came second place two years ago at the same show. This one by Gyprat Belles Connection and out of Saxown Major Leagues Heidi 2 will likely be shown at the Great Yorkshire Show next month.

Commenting on his champion judge Nick Dain, Norfolk said for a young Holstein this one was as good as it gets. “This one’s udders were as sweet as a whistle, walks so well and had plenty of style and presence in the ring. She was difficult to fault.”
