Livestock Event 2016: Broome family secures top two South Devon titles

One of the country’s biggest herds of South Devons scored a double at the South Devon Herd Book Society’s Performance Championship at the 2016 Livestock Event, winning the breed championship with a home-bred heifer and the reserve with a young bull.

January 2014-born Welland Valley Claudia 12, sired by Z Welland Valley Trident 1 out of Welland Valley Claudia 2, pipped Welland Valley Pioneer 5 to the top spot.

Judge Peter Rowe, Liskeard, said he had selected her over the bull because of her “tremendous width” but added: “Both are exceptional cattle that are representative of the breed.’’

The Welland Valley herd, which numbers 150 cows and followers, is run by Malcolm and Thelma Broome, Market Harborough, Leicestershire.

Welland Valley Claudia 12, which also won the reserve breed championship at Suffolk Show, is in calf to Welland Valley Dynamic.

March 2014-born Welland Valley Pioneer 5, also home-bred, is sired by Welland Valley Crusader out of Welland Valley Dainty 16.
