Winter Fair judges announced

The judges have been announced for this year’s Royal Highland Winter Fair and I think you’ll agree it’s a pretty impressive list!

Donald MacPherson, Castlehills Farm, Berwick-upon-Tweed, will be placing the Continental cross beef cattle and judging the overall champions. Donald is no stranger to the main ring at this event, having won the championship no less than five times and reserve at least three.                .

Donald farms about 150 acres half in Scotland and half in England, as well as being involved with his father and brother, both Ewen, in buying and showing commercial cattle from the home farm of Mill, Barcaldine, near Oban.

In charge of the sheep classes this year is the current President of the Royal Smithfield Club, Brian Glaves from Scarborough. He said, “It is always a great honour to be invited to Scotland to judge.” He last judged the Winter Fair in 1987 and has judged Smithfield and the Welsh Winter Fair several times.

Brian, his wife, Doreen and two sons, Anthony and James have a small 200 acre farm where they run 800 Suffolk and Texel cross ewes and small pedigree flocks of Suffolks, Texels and Southdowns. They kill most of their lambs in their own abattoir to supply their butcher shop in Brompton, B W and D J Glaves and Sons.

Carlisle butcher, Jimmy Mulholland of Mid Town Farm, Great Orton, will have the tough job of placing the butchers cattle on Wednesday but he will have the chance to get his eye in on Tuesday evening when he will judge the Caledonian Marts commercial calf competition.

Another well-known face at the Winter Fair is Scott Watson, formerly of Balhousie at Carnoustie. Scott will be judging the native classes and the popular Aberdeen Angus and AK Stoddart Angus Calf Show.

The Marks and Spenxcer Premier Meat Exhibition takes place unusually this year before the event at Ingliston. The live judging at Perth Agricultural Centre is on Wednesday 19th November when Tom Stevenson, Balmacolly, Bankfoot, will make all the decisions in the cattle section and Richard Colegrave of Guardswell, Abernyte, will select the lamb winners.
