Third calver bags £2,200 top price at Skipton

Champion milker at the Easter Monday Craven Dairy Auction at Skipton Auction Mart was the first prize Holstein Friesian newly calven heifer from father and son farmers Raymond and Robert Johnson, of Felliscliffe, Harrogate.

The victor, giving 28 litres, headed for pastures new in Lancashire when joining John Whittaker, of Laneshawbridge, for £2,180.

The Johnsons clinched all three rosettes in the first-time calvers class, their third prize winner, giving 30 litres, heading the show prices at £2,200 when selling locally to Carleton’s John Howard. They also sold two further entries at £1,940.

Brian Moorhouse, of Bell Busk, was again among the prizes when presenting the first prize newly calven cow, a £1,880 acquisition by ringside regular Wick Williams, of Nantwich, Cheshire.

Newly calven heifers averaged £1,902 and newly calven cows £1,535. Show judge was Stephen Abbott, of Dacre.
