Time to champion British pork and poultry

Members of the pig and poultry sectors are being asked to make a pledge to champion the industry and promote British pork and chicken.

The Champion Pork and Poultry Initiative, headed up by the Royal Agricultural Society of England and supported by a number of industry bodies, was asking visitors to the British Pig and Poultry Fair 2012 to sign up to help promote British produce.

Alice Bell, RASE event organiser said: “We need to get better at marketing and everyone can do a little bit to raise awareness – everyone can promote British produce.”

The initiative has put together 10 simple ideas which everyone can get involved with; be it putting up a banner on farm, talking to local community groups or writing to an MP. RASE has also produced a number of resources to help industry members fulfil their pledge to promote British produce.

“It’s all about getting producers to have some kind of communication with the wider consumer,” said Ms Bell.

She stressed that farmers themselves were consumers, and they should do all they could to demand British produce when in restaurants or supermarkets. “If we don’t do anything, no one will,” she said.

Peter Kendall, president of the NFU, added; “We need to encourage consumers to buy British – if we don’t, we won’t have a pig and chicken industry.

“As an industry we need to brag more about our standards of welfare.”
