Commercial beef producers could benefit from a series of free practical workshops in the run-up to the bull sales in coming weeks.
The three practical workshops, which are being held in Forfar, Newton Stewart and Pathhead, will help producers gain a better understanding of and develop their ability to select bulls for specific purposes on the farm. Potential buyers will also benefit from the day, as they will work with catalogues for imminent bull sales.
EBVs provide information which helps commercial beef farmers identify bulls which breed calves that maximise returns for the store producer and finisher.
The information can also assist in selecting bulls for their ability to provide good milky replacements and those that are best to go on heifers to avoid calving difficulties.
QMS Livestock development manager, Kathy Peebles, said, “We are delighted to have the expertise of SAC to deliver this information and run these workshops for us. Previous workshops were hailed a big success by all who attended, so we look forward to a lot more producers leaving these workshops with an improved understanding of performance recording and why they should use it as an essential decision-making tool when buying a breeding bull.”
SAC beef specialist Gavin Hill said, “The workshops will allow active participation and will offer practical help to producers wanting to improve their ability to use EBVs. I would urge any producer thinking of buying a breeding bull, whether for maternal or terminal use, to contact the relevant SAC office and book a place at these workshops.”
The EBV workshops must be booked through the relevant local SAC office.
