LAMMA 10: Ten top tractors at Newark

The LAMMA show opens today (20 Jan) and is a great place to see the latest tractor models. David Cousins and Emily Padfield round up 10 new models making their debut in the UK for the first time.

John Deere 5M

Following the launch of its top-of-the-range 5R Series last year, Deere now offers a lower-spec’d 5M Series spanning the 70 to 100hp bracket (picture, top). Each has the same 4.5-litre PowerTech engine as the 5R, with a mechanical fuel injection system, charge air cooler and turbocharger. Three 40kph transmission options are available, the 32/16 Power Reverser with clutchless shifting, a basic 16/16 Power Reverser and 16/16 Sync Reverser. All have a wet clutch and a choice of either 74 litres/min or 94 litres/min hydraulic systems to cope with loader work.

John Deere 8R and 8RT Series

John Deere’s 8R and 8RT Series tractors, which replace the outgoing 8030 range of tractors, have more horsepower, a new cab and, in the case of the tracked machine, a whole new undercarriage. The five-model R Series tractors range from 245hp to 345hp with power boost up to 280hp and 380hp respectively, whereas the RT tracked machines (below) range from 295hp to 345hp, with boost from 330hp to 380hp. The new models keep the same nine-litre four-valve common-rail Deere PowerTech Plus engine but get a 10% power increase, resulting in 15-20hp more.

Massey Ferguson 7499

Massey Ferguson had the new flagship of its 7400 Series on show at LAMMA. The 240hp 7499 boasts Dyna-VT CVT and, alongside the smaller 225hp 7497 model, is powered by a 7.4-litre Agco Sisu engine. Aimed at larger farmers and contractors, both tractors feature a beefy front-axle casting capable of being fitted with a 4t integral front linkage system and front pto. QuadLink front-axle suspension and 50kph transmission are also available.

MF 5400

MF has introduced cab suspension as an option on its 82hp-145hp 5400 Series tractors. The mechanical system uses two block bushes to support the cab at the front with a pair of spring-assisted shock absorbers mounted at the back. There’s a Panhard rod at the rear, too, to provide three-dimensional suspension – up and down and side to side. Damping is adjusted at the factory via the shocks themselves.

Landini 5-H

Landini’s four-model 5-H Series ranges from 74hp to 102hp. Powered by a four-cylinder Perkins engine, it replaces the current Vision and powershuttle versions of the popular Powerfarm tractor, taking the best features from both, says the company. The 5-H gains a planetary reduction rear axle and a three-speed powershift transmission.

McCormick MC

McCormick’s MC four-cylinder tractors now have a four-post cab with roof window for better all-round visibility. Technical changes include a revised braking system and the option of independent front-axle suspension. Inside, the cab’s been updated too, with a new instrument display and improved air vent layout.

New Holland 6090

New Holland’s mid-size T6090, new flagship of the T6000 range, boosts from 165hp to 201hp. Given that it weighs just under 6t, this gives it a power-to-weight ratio of an impressive 28kg/hp. The six-cylinder, viscous-cooled 6.74-litre engine can be mated to either NH’s Power Command transmission or Range Command with either 40kph Eco or 50kph boxes. Other T6000s fitted with Power Command or Range Command get extra horsepower thanks to more power boost and larger cooling packs.

Case IH Puma 60kph

First shown at Agritechnica last November, Case IH had its bling 60kph 225hp Puma CVX fitted with ABS as its centrepiece. Although shown in a prototype form, it’s expected that the 60kph transmission shown on the flagship Puma will be offered throughout the CVT range later this year. Before now, the only tractors to be fitted with ABS have been Fastracs, but Case IH adopts a system that uses force from compressed air which is then converted into hydraulic force, meaning it can be used on existing hydraulic tractor braking systems.

Case IH Puma 125

As well as showing a 6-cylinder 125hp model which extends the Puma range to overlap with the Maxxum Multicontrol series, Case IH now offers 125, 140 and 155 models with Semi-Powershift 40kph and 50kph transmissions. Power management on 140 and 155 models has been upgraded, and 165hp, 180, 195 and 210 models get increased pto performance, too. For transport, there’s now the option of an exhaust brake on all models.

Claas Arion 400

Making its show debut on the Claas stand was the three-model Arion 400 range. The 410, 420 and 430 models (rated at 95hp, 105hp and 115hp respectively) replace the Ares 500 range, now defunct thanks to Tier 3 emissions legislation. Powered by 4.5-litre eight-valve Deere Power Systems Powertech E engines, this loader-ready tractor can be supplied in two specs. Standard spec comes with 16/16 Quadrishift transmission, 60 litre/min hydraulic pump plus a separate 46 litre/min steering pump. The CIS versions boast a further 10hp power boost on all three models, meaning max power rises to 110hp, 120hp and 130hp respectively.
