New Holland closes sales gap with John Deere

The difference in sales between the top-selling two tractor makers – Deere and New Holland – closed slightly in 2009, according to the most recent market share figures from the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA), released during LAMMA week. EU competition rules state that the AEA is only allowed to issue individual makers’ sales figures after a year’s delay.

The overall market was down from 18,564 tractors in 2008 to 16,326 in 2009 and while some makers saw a fall in sales, others enjoyed a rise.

John Deere held the top spot for the 11th year running, although its sales dropped from 5613 in 2008 to 4727 in 2009, and its market share dipped from 30.2% to 29%.

New Holland was the next biggest seller, with 3218 sales in 2009 compared to 3339 in 2008, giving its market share a boost from 18% to 19.7%. Not far behind it was Massey Ferguson, with sales of 1992 tractors and a market share of 12.2% in 2009, down from 2911 sales and a 15.7% market share in 2008.

tractor sales graphJust below it on the UK sales league is Case IH with sales of 1279 tractors in 2009 compared to 1299 in 2008, but with a slight upward nudge in market share, from 7% to 7.8%. Behind it comes Claas, with a jump in tractor sales from 941 in 2008 to 982 in 2009 and an improvement in market share from 5.1% in 2008 to 6% in 2009.

As ever, a number of tractor companies with quite reasonable sales still drop below the 5% market share figure. Same Deutz-Fahr saw sales drop a little from 881 tractors in 2008 to 796 in 2009. However, because it was a falling overall market, its share edged up from 4.7% to 4.9%.

Not far behind it is Kubota, which saw a useful improvement in sales and market share, from 605 tractors sold and a market share of 3.3% in 2008 to 750 tractors sold and a 4.6% market share in 2009.

Premium tractor maker Fendt had a good year, with a jump in sales from 477 tractors in 2008 to 625 in 2009. In fact, it overtook fellow Agco brand Valtra, which dropped back from 601 sales in 2008 to 533 in 2009.

Meanwhile, McCormick saw a drop in sales from 605 in 2008 to 431 in 2009, while fellow AgriArgo brand Landini went from 238 sales in 2008 to 165 in 2009. JCB saw a small drop in sales from 226 in 2008 to 210 in 2009.
