Nozzle to beat blackgrass?

A NEW spray nozzle launched this autumn could improve spray distribution and help herbicide efficacy, manufacturers claim.

The Hawk nozzle, developed by Syngenta, is available to growers this autumn for use with the herbicide Hawk.

The nozzle produces a forward facing spray, which treats the weed from the side, rather than just above, therefore increasing the target area for spray to hit, the company claims.

Field testing found blackgrass control was improved from 97 to 99% when a prototype of the new nozzle was used to apply Hawk, said the company‘s Alison Bosher.

“Because black-grass is such a difficult and prolific weed, it is vital growers squeeze every last percent of control they can.”

The nozzle is aimed for use when treating blackgrass at the vulnerable 1-2 leaf stage, added Clare Butler-Ellis from the Silsoe Research Institute.

“The smaller the target size the more important the nozzle becomes – and this particular one was designed to provide maximum benefit on small targets.”
