Manitou isn’t sure whether rear-mounted loaders are the past or the future of telehandler design, but the French firm has gone ahead with the rebuild of its MLT627 loader.

The new 629 gets something of a rare breed under new farm machinery bonnets – a 100hp, 3.4-litre Perkins powerplant. It will meet the latest wave of emission regs and drives through a four-speed mechanical box and torque convertor set-up.

Lifting capacity is 2.9t to 5.55m, which Manitou hopes will appeal to livestock and poultry farmers. There are three heights available depending on whether you opt for the compact, wide or high-cab version and widths range from 2-2.16m for tight shed work. There are also three spec levels – classic, premium and elite – although traditionally the top two specs are the biggest sellers in the UK.
