SURVEILLANCE for veterinary medicine residues in 1997 shows that 99.5% of samples were clear, compared with 99.2% in 1996.

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) – a division of MAFF – tested almost 40,000 food samples for various medicines including antibiotics.

The results, published in the VMD Annual Report on Surveillance for Veterinary Residues 1997, show only 0.13% of samples were found with residue levels over the legal Maximum Residue Limits (MRL).

Jeff Rooker, junior farm minister, said: “These results should reassure consumers that the vast majority of food they eat is free from any veterinary medicine residues.

“The surveillance programme goes beyond the statutory requirements and covers meats, eggs and milk as well as packaged foods like pies, ready meals and dairy products.
