Actor fails to halt beef loan to China
AN attempt by Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin has failed to halt a loan to Chinese peasants, enabling them to raise beef cattle.
The World Bank ignored a plea by Mr Baldwin, a prominent animal rights activist, and pushed ahead with a 60m loan that will help Chinas poorest farmers.
The loan will enable producers to turn farm waste products into animal feed.
Mr Baldwin had urged the loan to be withheld because of “the cruelty involved in raising and slaughtering animals for food”.
