African coup leader pledges farm aid

THE military leader of the coup in the Ivory Coast has put help for the countrys beleaguered cocoa farmers high on his agenda.

The African state is the worlds largest cocoa producer, but last years collapse in the world price of the commodity caused considerable unrest.

Coup leader General Robert Guei made an immediate promise to improve the lot of farmers by promising more state aid for producers.

But analysts believe there are no obvious short-term solutions to the crisis in cocoa, still dogged by the world market crash.
