Aid for flood-hit flax growers?

By FWi staff

FLAX and hemp growers who have been unable to lift their crops due to the wet weather should still receive their area aid.

Brussels regulations state that flax crops should have been cleared by 30 November, and hemp by 31 December, to qualify for subsidy.

But clearly this has not been possible on many farms this year – a matter which was raised at farm council in Brussels by agriculture minister Nick Brown.

In reply, European farm commissioner, Franz Fischler said the commission was not able to change the regulation.

But a special provision will be introduced, so that those farmers who could not bring in their harvest can receive their aid, he added.
