…All-time low for April planting tally

POTATO plantings to the end of April were the lowest since records began. "The previous lowest year was 1979, with 62,000ha," reports the BPCs Bob Burrow. "But growers still managed to plant 170,000ha (425,000 acres) by the end of May in that year."

Early plantings are expected to finish 10% down. But it is still to early to predict maincrop areas, he says.
