Anti-GM protests threaten research

THE campaign against genetically-modified (GM) crops threatens to hamper Britain in the race to master the new technology, a leading businessman has warned.

Sir Richard Sykes, chairman of Glaxo Wellcome, is also the president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

The result of the current campaign could well be to the disadvantage of British agriculture, he will tell the association on Monday.

Sir Richards specific comments on GM foods come amid a general criticism of the lack of investment in British science.

Sir Richard will call for concerted action by government, industry and universities to boost Britains international competitiveness in scientific and technical innovation.
