Antibiotics smuggled from Ireland

THE government is preparing to crack down on the growing black market in illegal antibiotics, according to a report in The Guardian.

Almost 40 investigations are being carried out by the veterinary medicines directorate into the unauthorised use of antibiotics and other medicines, it reports.

Most of the products have been sourced from Ireland, says the paper, in the second of a three-part investigation into the overuse of antibiotics.

Todays full-page spread is titled Antibiotics: wasted wonderdrugs.

Scientists have been aware for fifty years of a potential problem for humans arising from the use of antibiotics to promote growth in animals, it says.
