Auctioneer Philip Place (pictured left) saw steers and heifers average 104.8p and 102.8p/kg, respectively at Darlington, Co Durham last Thursday. Bulls levelled at 105p/kg. Steers over about 650kg liveweight are too heavy for the intervention market and, with demand quiet on the home market, are worth about 15p/kg less than lighter sorts. So resist the temptation to delay selling stock – especially those bought expensively as stores – to put extra weight on it, advises Darlington auctioneer Paul Carter. Some of the heifers could also do with being sold a month earlier, he suggests.
