Virtual potato advice… MAPP, a new computer-based management advisory package for potatoes from SCRI commercial arm Mylnefield Research Services, aims to help growers and advisers make critical decisions to maximise margins. The program combines on-farm and commercial data with research findings, allowing users to match seed rates to expected yields and markets, track crop development, irrigate effectively, predict output and tuber size, and determine optimum burn-down dates. Developed with help from BPC and Scottish Enterprise Tayside the software costs £500, plus an annual licence fee of £500 which covers up to 10 individual crop scenarios.
