Mange-free pig herds indoors worth effort

Everyone knows the comfort of a routine. But it may not be the most effective way of tackling problems. Mange control in pigs is a good example. Often routine treatment fails to eradicate mites completely and so regular treatment is needed.

But there is an alternative in indoor units. Using a technique of injecting stock, disinfecting housing and bio-security measures, eradication is possible, according to scientists.

Although initial costs and workload will be high, think of the long-term benefits. A mange-free herd means contented itch-free pigs, no more routine treatments, higher health status and premiums for breeding stock.
