Bulk stock batches will slim down costs
Economic livestock haulage means full lorries.
Traditionally, hauliers have travelled from farm to farm to make a full lorry load. But foot-and-mouth restrictions have put a stop to that and no one knows whether and when it will be allowed to resume.
Planning to finish larger batches of animals simultaneously could offer a solution. Admittedly, many factors including grass growth, disease and breeding can make this tricky. But taking a fresh look at how to minimise inefficiencies and produce uniform batches of animals will keep haulage economic and reduce costs elsewhere in the production system.
