Still outside… Milking cows are still grazing outside during the day on Kevin Greens dairy unit, near Carmarthen. This season has been one of the best for grass growth and fields have remained reasonably dry this autumn. High stocking rates of 7.9 animals/ha (3.2 animals/acre) at the unit are allowing swards to be grazed down to 2100kg DM/ha of cover before housing, says Mr Green. Last year, more than 2400kg DM/ha grass cover was left, resulting in grass losses due to winter kill.
