AROUND THE SALES
MILK QUOTA: Average price was 9.58p/litre at an auction in Cheshire on Monday. Attendance was affected as farmers concentrated on silaging. Reduced milk prices and further cuts in cull cow values have affected bidding power. Those who attended came either to buy at low prices or just look, say auctioneers Frank R Marshall.
CALVES: Frome hosted its first Monday sale this week, following the closure of Sturminster Newton seven days before. The day saw 31 calves top the £200-mark, with a top of £258 taken by a Limousin bull. Premier Livestock Auctions saw an overall average of £108 for 412 calves.
DAIRY CATTLE: Despite the doom and gloom over falling OTMS compensation, dairystock values were buoyant at Chelford on Monday, says auctioneers Frank R Marshall. Newly-calved heifers made to £1150, with the next highest at £1030.
