RECORD numbers of farmers in the south-east are applying to convert to organic production.

In the first six months of the year 28 producers applied to join the 90 farmers whose applications to join the Organic Aid Scheme are already being considered.

During a visit to the organic research and demonstration centre, Elm Farm, Newbury, Berks, junior farm minister Lord Donoughue said: "I encourage moves in this direction and fully support the organic sector." &#42

Lord Donoughue believes there is a trend towards organic farming.
