Attack on subsidies
AN all-out assault on export subsidies is expected to be launched this weekend, as 15 farm ministers from the Cairns Group of countries gather in Buenos Aires for their 19th annual meeting.
The ministers will discuss what they want out of the impending World Trade Organisation talks.
Canada recently launched its manifesto, calling for an end to all agricultural export subsidies which, it says, have prolonged world oversupply and depressed prices for basic commodities.
And Australia, which will chair the Cairns Group session, this week said it wanted to send a clear signal to the US, Europe and Japan that high levels of government support were unacceptable. *
