Autumn closes well for Charollais ewe lambs

CHAROLLAIS sheep ended the breeds autumn sale season on a high note when prices reached 1600gns for a ewe lamb at a collective female sale at Malvern.

The lamb, from Arwyn and Jane Thomas, Whitland, Carmarthen- shire, generated a spate of lively bidding but was successfully claimed by Mr and Mrs E R Hazelby, Newcastle Emlyn.

The 102 catalogued entries were from Mr Thomas flock as well as selections from father-and-daughter team, Derrick Daffurn and Jennifer Curtis, plus Tim Prichard and Dilwyn Davies.

A total of 84 sheep were sold with 36 heading for Wales. Second highest bid was 670gns made by D G and J Green, Ely, Cambs for a shearling ewe from Derrick Daffurn and another from the same home made 400gns to &#42 Lloyd Francis, Aberystwyth. Mr Lloyd Francis bought five females.

Age was no barrier to breeders looking for quality females and led to a five-shear ewe from Tim Prichard making 360gns to Cecil Thomas, Coventry. Derrick Daffurn paid 320gns for a three-shear ewe and sold one of his ewe lambs at 400gns to G Godber, Redditch, Worcs. The 84 sheep averaged £231. (Russell, Baldwin and Bright). &#42
