Backing for GM committee shake-up
THE governments decision to overhaul the committee which approves the planting of genetically modified (GM) crops wins the support of columnists writing in The Guardian.
Concern had been raised about the Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment after it approved all 160 applications for experimental plantings.
Critics had voiced concern about the impartiality of the committee.
Ten of its 13 current members were either directly employed or received research funding from the same companies that wanted to market GM crops.
