‘Ban GM crops and go organic’ — Scots

FARMERS should ban genetically modified (GM) crops and help Scotlands organic growers get ahead in the food business, a Dunfermline conference on organic farming was told yesterday (Thursday).

But Tony Combes, head of public affairs with the Safeway supermarket group, took the opposite view.

Mr Combers said organic producers should take up GM crops as a means of avoiding the use of pesticides.

Mr Combes is leaving his company in April to join Monsanto, the US biotechnology company with interests in GM crops.
