Barley comes off as expected

JIM MACFARLANE, who farms at Foulden near Berwick-upon-Tweed, has combined 13ha (31 acres) of Angela winter barley.

The six-row variety yielded about 8t/ha (3.25t/acre). “We would expect 10t/ha in a good year. But I did not have high hopes.

“It did as well as expected. Im also quietly optimistic about the rest of the crops.”

It was combined at 15.5 % with specific weight 61Kg/hl. 13ha (31 acres) was the extent of winter barley sown on the farm, with heavy soil.

His 35ha (87 acres) of winter oilseed rape should be ready next week. “Herald and Pronto look well and Gemini looks exceptional.”

Coming ready at the end of August will be 84ha (208 acres) of spring barley. He says some second wheat may be fit first, although there may be a take-all problem. He says the first wheat looks well.
