Barley, oilseed below average in Essex

OILSEED rape yields are below average for Littlebury Farming Partnership, near Saffron Walden in Essex, according to manager Carl Juhl. “The harvest is slightly below average.”

Estimated yield of 121ha (300 acres) out of 154ha (380acres) of Escort is 2.5t/ha (1t/acre). The average for the farm is about 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre).

Forty-nine hectares (120 acres) of Pearl winter barley has yielded 6.8t/ha (2.7t/acre) which he says is 1.2t/ha (0.5t/acre) down on average. But the quality is good with nitrogen 1.65% and he describes it as a bold sample.

The farm is on a medium soil. They are about five days behind for the time of year, and hope to move onto Claire and Consort winter wheat in four days.
