Beef damages from France

FIRST steps have been taken by the NFU in its attempt to secure compensation from France for its continued ban on British beef.

A letter has been sent to French prime minister, Lionel Jospin, spelling out the background to the current dispute and explaining the legal basis for him to lift the ban immediately.

"The facts speak for themselves," says NFU president, Ben Gill. "With the legal arguments so much in favour of the ban being lifted, France cannot be allowed to continue this course."

Assuming Mr Jospin is unmoved by this plea, the NFU will then seek an injunction in the French courts. "Once the French ban has been declared unlawful, the British beef industry will be entitled to claim damages from the French government," says the NFU.
