Big four selected for bull promotion

THE MLC has identified the first four bulls in its newly launched Young Bull Promotion Scheme.

For each bull selected 100 straws of semen will be distributed free of charge to at least 20 different pedigree herds recording under Signets Beefbreeder service.

Bulls chosen are the South Devon Cilgwrrwg Illya, owned by Richard Hartstone, Charolias Balthaycock Nougat owned by Robert Robinson, and two Simmentals – Milnfua Hemlock owned by William Gill and Haddon Burditts Brooklyn Jonti.

According to MLC beef scientist Duncan Pullar, three of the bulls selected are in the top 1% of their breed for beef value, with the other in the top 5% of its breed. Dr Pullar says breeders wishing to obtain straws through the scheme should contact the relevant breed society.

The scheme aims to promote rapid genetic improvement in beef breeds by encouraging use of the best young bulls early in their life, adds Dr Pullar.

This will lead to a rapid increase in the quality of beef sires, says Dr Pullar. "The knock-on benefit is that commercial producers should have a higher calibre of beef bull to use in herds."
