Bleak outlook for milk prices

JACK PIRIE, Scottish Milk chief executive, said there was little prospect of dairy farmers receiving better milk prices in the foreseeable future.

He said there was a surplus of about 5% in the marketplace and no sign of that easing.

Scottish Milk is a farmer-owned co-operative. Its members are due to receive their May milk cheques later this week which are expected to show a reduction of 3ppl on the corresponding payments of a year ago.

But Mr Pirie said prices could possibly remain stable if Milk Marque waived its 90% purchase rule in England next month.

Mr Pirie also hinted that a tie-up between Scottish Milk and the smaller northern co-ops Claymore and Aberdeen Milk was still on the cards.
