Bold move towards beef with chips
A BOLD proposal by the Argentinian government to install microchips in each
of the countrys 50 million head of cattle has met with strong opposition
from the meat sector.
Interior minister Rodolfo Terragno has pushed for each of Argentinas
50 million head to be fitted with electronic identification.
The chip could either be ingested by the animal or planted strategically
on the neck, Stella Maris Martinez, manager of the Argentine Beef Industry
Association, told Reuters news agency.
“If you put it on the neck it could result in it showing up in the cuts
of beef,” she commented.
Microchips are seen as a means of keeping track of herds and tackling
rampant tax evasion.
