BPAreiterates MLCopinions

THE British Pig Association has used its annual general meeting as a platform to repeat its call for a complete restructuring of the Meat and Livestock Commission.

Speaking at the London meeting, BPA chairman John Godfrey said that the unprecedented crisis in the pig industry had highlighted the pig sectors long-standing disenchantment with the MLC.

The BPA called last month for fundamental change to the commission in its submission to the governments five-yearly review of the MLC, and again criticised the MLCs delayed response to the current pig industry crisis at its AGM.

"There are many pig farmers who consider that no solution would be adequate unless the commission is replaced with a specific pig industry organisation," said Mr Godfrey.

&#8226 The BPA has announced that Tony Houghton will be its new chief executive. Mr Houghton will replace Grenville Welsh who retires early next year.

after 17 years in the post.
