Breeder releases new guide to milling wheat

WINTER wheat growers considering new soft milling variety Deben will benefit from a comprehensive technical guide based on six years of work, says breeder Nickerson.

"All varieties are not the same and need to be treated differently to optimise the outcome," says wheat breeder Bill Angus. "Using disease resistant varieties, such as Deben, can play an important part in controlling input costs, particularly when grain prices are so low.

"However, growers need to know how best to manage new varieties to ensure they take full advantage of their great genetic potential."

The 27-page guide explains how Deben does best as a second or subsequent wheat and on marginal sites, thanks to its high yield potential, good Septoria and yellow rust resistance and acceptable eyespot resistance.

The guide can be downloaded from the internet at A similar guide is available for sister variety Claire.
