British beef is safe, Cunningham to tell EU
AGRICULTURE minister Jack Cunningham hopes to persuade the European Union (EU) of the safety of British beef and the urgent need to reform the European livestock sector at an informal three-day meeting of EU farm ministers beginning on Sunday.
Ministers will be taken into a barn at the Duke of Northumberlands specialist beef farm and shown a video detailing Britains new electronic cattle tracing scheme, due to begin in September.
He is also keen that farm ministers address the problem of overproduction of beef in Europe, and he hopes to lead a debate on how to adapt EU policies which “are failing to provide the appropriate incentive to keep farmers economically viable … in less favoured areas”.
