Brown spells out plans to NFU

NICK BROWN, the Agriculture Minister, gave a quick rundown of his policy intentions at the annual meeting of the National Farmers Union in London yesterday.

Issues covered included animal welfare, the pesticide tax, early retirement for farmers and continued support for less-favoured areas.

On welfare, he thought the solution was either to give producers a premium by legal enactment for good welfare, or through involving the World Trade Organisation. He said the question of animal welfare payments as part of the reformed Common Agricultural Policy would have to be looked at.

Mr Brown was against a pesticide tax, seeing it as adding to costs and doing little to reduce their use.
