BSE adviser charged in Italian corruption inquiry

TOP European Union BSE adviser Professor Vittorio Silano has been
charged by Italian police investigating a corruption scam.

He is charged with alleged abuse of office while working with
Francesco de
Lorenzo, the disgraced former health minister, in 1990. Silano was
director general of the hygiene division of food and nutrition at the
Health Ministry at the time.

Silano has resigned from his post in the Italian Health Ministry
but he has not
so far been asked to quit his job at the European Commissions
Scientific Steering Committee.
