BSE hits Irish research station

A HERD of 560 cattle – and three years-worth of work – will be destroyed at an Irish research station after a cow was found to be suffering from BSE. The Dairy Research Product Centre at Moorepark, Co Cork, was using its herd in work aimed at increasing milk output to 2000 gallons an acre of grassland by the year 2000.

Irish attempts to re-open its export markets will be knocked back. BSE is declining in Ireland, but it has still been the second-worst hit country in the EU, after Britain.
