Call to scrap SSSI payment scheme
By Farmers Weekly staff
THE environment, transport and regional affairs select committee has urged the Government to abolish compensation payments for producers with Sites of Special Scientific Interests on their land.
In the committees report on the governments conservation advisor, English Nature, it said the profits foregone payments – money offered to landowners farming SSSIs to compensate them for the loss of production – was not cost-effective. Instead there should be agreements which encourage conservation management of the sites.
