CANADIAN IMPORT IS TOP

By Jessica Buss

THE winner of the 20th National Holstein Show, but the first held under the Holstein UK and Ireland banner, was Welcome Stormy Lightning.

Shown by David Swale one of her three owners, she topped the 412 entries from 122 exhibitors at the show, judged by US breeder Brian Garrison. The cows other two owners are Alan Swale, Joylan Farms and Roy Beattie of the Delevan herd.

They imported the cow from Canada over two years ago.

Welcome Stormy Lightning was sired by Diamond Oak Stormy – a Blackstar son – and yielded 12,395kg at 3.9% fat and 3.2% protein in her third 305-day lactation. Following her fourth calving in October, she is currently yielding 62kg a day.

While reserve champion Excalibar Saucy Skychief, also imported from Canada, had the best udder in the show, Welcome Stormy Lightning had better overall conformation particularly in her mobility, leg-set, frame and body, said Mr Garrison.

He added that cattle at the show were obviously bred for ecomomics, they were efficient cattle with good type that would produce a lot of milk.

Holstein UK and Ireland chief executive Tim Brigstocke was pleased with the positive outcome of this first event since the HFS and BHS merger, with more cows and exhibitors than in previous years. He added that local clubs were also coming together well following the merger, an area where they had expected some problems. &#42
