‘Carousel’ sanctions anger EU
THE EU and US are heading for a major confrontation in their trade dispute over beef and bananas, reports the Financial Times.
US Congress efforts to step up economic pressure on Brussels to accept World Trade Organisation rulings against its banana import regime and hormone treated beef ban, have enraged the EU.
The European Commission has accused the US of “fanning the flames” after the House of Representatives voted for $308m sanctions applied last year to be rotated.
The “carousel” which would spread sanctions more widely across EU exporters threatens to complicate efforts to Bill Clintons administration to settle trade differences with Europe.
