Check bean seed

BEAN growers should make sure seed has been tested for bean stem nematode before drilling, says the PGRO.

"It jumped to number one importance in bean pests this year," says pulse expert Anthony Biddle.

Buying-in seed is no guarantee it will be clean, as nematode testing is not a certification requirement. "Make sure your merchant has had the seed lot tested. For home saved seed we can do tests, or use the Official Seed Testing Station in Cambridge."

Cost of a PGRO test is £11.50/sample + VAT.
