Clean bill for BST

BST, the milk-boosting hormone bovine somatotrophin, in dairy cows poses no danger to human health, animal welfare or babies, according to a detailed study by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Health Organisation.

The findings are thought to pose no threat to the EUs existing ban on the use of BST, currently in force until Mar 31, 2000. But they are likely to be used by the USA (which currently treats about 15% of its cows with BST) as a negotiating point in the next round of world trade talks.
