Co-op bans lindane from all crops
by FWi staff
THE Co-op Wholesale Society has written to all its farmer-suppliers asking them not to use lindane as a treatment for any produce sold in its stores.
CWS Farms, which farms over 34,400 ha (85,000 acres), said it was completely banning the use of the chemical, already banned as a seed treatment.
The move comes amid mounting concerns by consumer and environmental groups over the effect of the chemical on human health.
“The time is right to act,” said a Co-op spokesman, who added that lindane has already been banned in a number of European Union countries.
