Compensation meeting

REPRESENTATIVES of rural organisations and businesses met the Country Land and Business Association this week to discuss the scope of the compensation they feel the government should provide to those hit by the foot-and-mouth crisis.

The CLAs Oliver Harwood says it is important to take a sensible line as to who should or should not receive compensation. "We feel the greater the linkage between the governments actions and the problems facing businesses the greater the case for payment."

This means livestock hauliers brought to a standstill would have a strong case, he adds.

Mr Harwood is hoping to present the groups findings to MAFF within the week.

The NFU will not press for further compensation for farmers until it has been able to fully assess the impact of the outbreak, says chief economist Siôn Roberts. &#42
