Competition probe for NI market levy?
By FWi staff
THE Ulster Farmers Union has confirmed that it has referred the Livestock Markets Associations 2 buyers levy to the Competition Commission.
The union warned it was considering the move last week, after talks between the two organisations failed to find a solution to the issue.
But the union reiterated its concern on Tuesday (06 February) that the LMA has imposed an anti-competitive levy across the industry.
Douglas Rowe, UFU president said: “The markets play a vital role within the farming industry and we would encourage them to resolve financial issues on an individual basis.
“The union is opposing the principle of a flat rate levy being imposed across the province. This is not fair competition and is not in the best interests of farmers.”
