Consignment sale best bid 5200gns for heifer

FASHIONABLE pedigrees created the liveliest bidding for Holstein Friesian cattle at the Summer Consignment sale at Penrith last week.

Bidding reached 5200gns for Overthwaite Baltimore Christabel, a November calved heifer by the Triple Threat son Aldingham Baltimore and out of a Fair Play dam.

She was part of the dispersal of noted north Lancs breeder Bernard Parsons Overthwaite herd. She joins the Morestone herd of P A and C Shardlow and Sons near Whitby.

Nine from this consignment made 2000gns and over including Mia Lady Tesk, taken at 4100gns by Aberdeenshire breeder Jean Baird, who took a total of 13 for her Whattonvale herd.

Other high prices for Mr Parsons included 4000gns for Overthwaite Counselor M Whin-fell and 3800gns for Overthwaite Counselor Fortune. Both were bought by Bruce Deane, Hickling, Norfolk.

The imported French cow Myersgarth Irene, by Curries-M Holiday, made 5000gns. She was one of 39 offered from Chris Iveson Farms herd at Leyburn, North Yorks and is out of a 12,000kg dam by Arlinda Rotate.

Yields of 10,800kg and 16,200kg have been achieved in her first two lactations. AId in November to Rudolph, she was one of eight bought by Kames Dairies for their new herd at Coldstream, Berwickshire.

The same buyers also paid 4000gns for Chris Ivesons imported cow Eiklyn Prelude Bibi and Myersgarth C Mark Fran, a Chief Mark daughter from the famous Plushanski Fran at family at 3100gns.

Quick off the mark for the first lot in the sale was James Rogerson who runs the high-yielding Avenham herd near Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He paid 4200gns for Shoremar Sunshine, a Startmore Supreme second calver also from the Myersgarth team.

Aspatria, Cumbria breeders Richard and Jane Skelton offered the entire milking portion of their Emeraldgill herd. Top call was 3200gns from Kames Dairies to secure Emeraldgill Astre Iolanthe, a daughter of the herds successful show cow Baronwood Threat Iolanthe.
