Controversial book inspires elegy

By FWi staff

MUSIC inspired by a polemic against intensive agriculture is to be the centrepiece of the BBC Proms summer season, reports The Times.

The season which is taking a pastoral theme for its concerts will premiere Knotgrass Elegy by Sally Beamish.

It was inspired by the book The Killing of the Countryside by Graham Harvey which mourns species and habitats lost through intensification.

The BBC said it was coincidence that it had chosen a pastoral theme at a time when foot-and-mouth has placed the countryside at the centre of public attention.

Other pastoral works included in the season are pieces by Beethoven, Vaughan Williams, Haydn and Britten.
